Fragrance Perception

Fragrance Perception

The perception of fragrance is a very personal thing. Every human is subject to many different kinds and strengths of scent experience throughout their lives, which is why every person can have a vastly different experience with fragrance perception. Many things can affect your sense of smell. The main areas of review in this article are: ย  Physical aliments โ€“ sinuses Overloading your olfactory receptors Colour associations Memory, Storage and time ย  Physical aliments Perhaps youโ€™re affected by sinus issues or allergies, if so this will always limit your sense of smell. It doesnโ€™t mean you have to have a cold to experience a limiting affect on your senses. You can wake up a little stuffy and this will mean your senses are now compromised for the day. ย  Olfactory receptors Sometimes your first experience of a scent is the strongest and then after that it dissipates. It doesnโ€™t take long for our olfactory receptors to become saturated by a certain odour, and once this happens you then have trouble detecting it later on. ย  Have you ever been next to someone who has poured half a bottle of perfume or cologne on? Itโ€™s so strong you can barely breath without coughingโ€ฆand you wonder cant they smell how strong that perfume is? No they cant, because they have become immune to the scent. Their olfactory receptors have been overloaded with a particular scent and they cannot smell it anymore. This is why a scent can be very strong to one person, and barely detectable by another. ย  Experiencing scent throw in very small confined spaces will also overload your olfactory receptors. ย  Memory, Storing & Time How you store your fragrance can also play a large role in how well it keeps. Fragrances are made up of many different ingredients and some can be affected by light, air oxidization, time and sometimes your own memory. ย  ย Perhaps you use your last bit of fragrance and you buy a new bottle after some time. You feel you know the fragrance well, because youโ€™ve used it many times, but perhaps the day you open the new bottle you feel the smell is not exactly the same as the old one. You think the manufacturer changed the formula, but this is very unlikely and very difficult to determine without an expensive gas chromatography and massย  pectrometry test. So you must reply on your own scent memory and perception to guide you, and we already know this is not a foolproof method. ย  There is no easy way to determine any differences. The only way for you to compare the two scents directly, is to put both fragrances on a blotter and compare side by side under exact conditions. Of course you need to make sure your old sample was kept in pristine conditions and wasnโ€™t compromised by time, oxidization and light. Then you need to have the exact same amount of fragrance on your blotter, because if one blotter has more fragrance than the other, this will compromise the test. You also have to smell with both nostrils, because one might be more congested than the other. And you must do a blind test because our brain can surely have preconceived outcomes, which are very difficult to change. ย  How old the scent is plays a large factor. If you are comparing a fragrance sample that is more than 12 months old, itโ€™s likely the fragrance will have subtle differences. You see the number of ingredients in a fragrance can be anywhere between 20 to 100 ingredients and some of these will mature and change over long periods of time and varying conditions, similar to the way red wine changes. For example to get the best tasting mature wine the environment must be temperature controlled. ย  Colour Association Colour association plays a big role in how well we identify scents. I considered myself to have a good sense of smell, whereby I can often name a scent from just smelling a candle. But I soon discovered I had no idea how much I used colour association, until some kids put me to the test. At the time we were coordinating our candle scents with colour. As a prominent candle making instructor, I conducted a kids class and kids donโ€™t colour coordinate scents. For examples one would choose blueberry fragrance but colour the candle yellow. During this class, once candles were set we had a โ€˜guess the scentโ€™ game and I got 2 out of 10 correct. I was shocked at how much colour association had on my sense perception. ย  So summing up, we are faced with sense perception challenges every day in many ways. We are constantly evaluating fragrances that are very similar or perhaps the same. Even by asking a question as simple as saying, โ€œDo you think these 2 fragrances smell the same?โ€ can prejudice the evaluator into either looking for a difference or looking for a similarity, depending on what he or she wishes the outcome to be. Naming the fragrance is also a big influencing factor โ€“ I canโ€™t tell you how many times we have given an evaluator the same fragrance under two different names, and the evaluator automatically assumed the fragrances are different because the samples were named differently. ย  So the next time one of your customers says, โ€œThis candle doesnโ€™t smell as strong as my previous purchaseโ€, bear in mind that they might be right โ€“ or they might not! Therefore we encourage you to share this article with them.ย

Product FAQ for Candle Vessels

Product FAQ for Candle Vessels

1 โ€“ Are jars and bottles painted? Yes majority of our jars and bottles are spray painted except for the PET bottles. This is often (not always) done by hand, therefore some variations are expected. Please refer toย More Information tab for further details. 2- Do you have matching lids & gift boxes? Yes. For example โ€“ If you buy a small jar, this will typically fit a small lid and small gift box. If any variations apply this will be listed in the product description area of the product in question. Please always check the product description first and always double check dimensions of product and gift box to ensure you will be happy with the fit. 3 โ€“ Do you offer further discounts on product for bulk orders? All our pricing is as listed online. ย  We do not further discount web stock unless we are over stocked on an item. ย We can only provide further discounts on items when they are pre-ordered in bulk and in advance.ย  This means when we order your quantities, over and above our web allocated stock.ย  Otherwise, it becomes impossible for us to manage stock availability, and it causes items to go out of stock sooner than anticipated, which means it takes us a lot longer to restock, and this ultimately upsets many customers. To secure stock availability guarantees and discounts pre-ordering is required: Minimum order quantities vary but usually start at 500 to 1000pcs. 40% deposit on order 60% Two weeks prior to arrival. Availability can be anywhere from 8 to 14 weeks based on the time of year of order. Email us if the above is workable and you would like a quote. 4 โ€“ Can I order a larger pack size and get different colours for the same tiered price? Unfortunately no. It requires additional labour and packaging materials to pick and pack a mixed order, which is why a single product gets cheaper the more you buy. If you are a regular buyer you may be eligible for a Trade account, which offers lower unit prices for smaller quantities ordered. Please check your eligibility here 5 โ€“ Are your jars suitable for candle making? Yes all our containers and jars have been manufactured to the global standard approved to withstand heat for burning candles. However itโ€™s very important the end user follows the candle use instructions stipulated on the candle warning labels. Burning Instructions:Keep wick trimmed to 7mm before each burn. Keep candle free of any foreign materials including matches and wick trimmings. Only burn the candle on a level, fire resistant surface and away from drafts. Do not burn candle for more than four hours at a time. Stop use when 15mm of wax remains to avoid jar cracking through overheating. 6 โ€“ Will fragrances have any reaction in the containers? Sometimes โ€“ itโ€™s imperative you do your own testing, especially with containers that are coloured on the inside. Fragrances are made with many different ingredients and sometimes the type and quality of the ingredients, along with the age of the fragrance plays a big role on whether or not it produces some kind of effect on the end product. 7 โ€“ What size wick should I use? Selecting the best wick size for specific jars is something we encourage the candle maker to determine, because when fine-tuning a candle burn, wick size can change according to wax and fragrance type and volume. Below is a โ€˜Wick Guideโ€™ you can use as a starting point. CDN 6 โ€“ Burn Diameter 45-50mm CDN 16 โ€“ Burn Diameter 70-75mm CDN 7 โ€“ Burn Diameter 50-55mm CDN 18 โ€“ Burn Diameter 75-80mm CDN 8 โ€“ Burn Diameter 55-60mm CDN 20 โ€“ Burn Diameter 80-85mm CDN 10 โ€“ Burn Diameter 60-65mm CDN 22 โ€“ Burn Diameter 85-90mm CDN 12 โ€“ Burn Diameter 65- 70mm CDN 24- Burn Diameter 90-95mm CDN 14 โ€“ Burn Diameter 65- 70mm CDN 26 โ€“ Burn Diameter 95-100mm 8 โ€“ What is the approximate burn time for 100% Soy Candles? These are high level estimates only โ€“ you must do your own tests to determine burn time. 160g = 30 to 40 hours 300g = 60 to 70 hours 450g = 100 to 120 hours 9 โ€“ Are your painted jars and bottles food safe? No, they are not food safe unless they are clear and not painted. 10 โ€“ Can I Return a product that I purchased on sale? All On Sale products are strictly no refunds, exchanges or returns. This includes all Run Out, Not Quite Right and general sale items. 11 โ€“ Do you custom logo printing on products? We do custom design and importing regular customers.ย ย We donโ€™t publicly advertise this because some clients donโ€™t understand the vast array of logistical dependencies associated with importing that fall outside of our direct control and subsequently the long lead times involved.ย  This is why we now only do this for a small select group of regular clients who understand the challenges and lead-time process. ย  We would be happy to have you join this group, however please review the following guidelines and if feasible send us an email. ย  Pre-order minimum order quantities (MOQ) are usually 500 to 1008 pcs per size per design for Gift Boxes All custom pre-orders require:ย  40% deposit on order 60% remaining one week prior to arrival. Availability can be anywhere from 10 to 14 from receipt of deposit. There are many elements and dependencies which change at different times throughout the year. ย  We can also put you in touch with local printers โ€“ itโ€™s more expensive per piece but their MOQ is also a lot less. ย  ย 11 โ€“ Why do wicks sometimes dislodge from base of jar Many things can cause this issue. It is either something related to the candle making process or your clients own candle maintenance process. We suggest going through a process of elimination with your process. Make sure jars are clean and dry before use. Do wick prepping well ahead of time to ensure the glue properly sets and adheres to the vessel before pouring wax. Keep pouring temp below 75 degrees. Do not move jars at all during the setting process User issue - clients can sometimes be very rough wick trimming and cutting wicks. This can easily dislodge wick User issue - Clients can burn candles for more than 4hrs at a time and this causes jars to overheatย  User issue - Clients can move candle jars whilst still warm causing wick movement and dislodgment.

Fragrance FAQ

What is the shelf life of fragrances? Manufacturers will offer a 12 month shelf life, however fragrances will be usable a lot longer if stored well in cool dark environments. Please be mindful fragrances have a tendency to change very slightly over time. This is usually a direct linkto how it has been stored and in what type of environment. This means if you are using a fragrance that is 18 months old and then order a freshly compounded batch, it may smell a little different. Most large candle makers will always use freshly compounded fragrances in order to maintain a consistency with their products. Will fragrances have any reaction in the containers? Sometimes โ€“ itโ€™s imperative you do your own testing, especially with containers that are coloured on the inside. Fragrances are made with many different ingredients and sometimes the type and quality of the ingredients, along with the age of the fragrance and how itโ€™s been stored, can play a big role on whether or not it produces some kind of effect on the end product or container in use. Are fragrance oils flammable? Yes they are. The degree of how flammable is presented via the flash point of a fragrance. The lower the flash point, the more volatile the fragrance will be. Therefore if a candle with a low flashpoint fragrance is burning very erratically, you may consider reducing the fragrance load or reduce the heat source being the wick size to counter balance the undesired effect. Are fragrances toxic if ingested? Yes they are. For advice, contact a doctor or the Australian Poisons Information Centre: 131 126 Can fragrances affect the colour of the wax? Yes they can. Fragrances can discolour finished products. If a fragrance is very yellow in colour it is more likely to discolour the wax over time. There are minimum 40+ ingredients used in fragrance manufacturing that may contribute to the discolouration of products. This is why your own testing is imperative. Are fragrances pure essential oils? No they are not. Fragrances are made by using both a combination of natural and synthetic (man-made) ingredients. The cost of 100% Natural fragrance will be somewhere in the vicinity of $800+ per kilo or more. As a result, itโ€™s not feasible to sell natural fragrances. Many of the ones you see listed on the internet, are not 100% natural fragrances. And if they are, they are likely to contain Palm Oil, which has its own global use issues due to deforestation and the effects this has on the natural habitants like the orangutang species. Anything that is 100% natural will typically be quite volatile and therefore you will need to use less, and your end products will not be as strong. Many 100% natural ingredients have higher levels of warnings associated with using them in combustion applications like candles. Can I blend fragrances? Yes you can blend fragrances, but we strongly suggest always test burning all new combinations. Are your fragrances triple scented? Yes they are. This termsrelates to how a fragrance is formulated with top notes, middles notes and bottom/base notes. Being triple scented does not mean adding 3 times the amount of fragrance.

Frequently Asked Questions

ย  ย How much wax will I need to make my candle? Please refer to lesson 5. Place empty jar on scales. Tare scales back to zero. Pour water to level the candle will finish at. And the weight of the water is the exact amount of wax flakes you will need to fill jars. How Much fragrance will I need? Please refer to lesson 5. Minimum 5% and maximum 10% of amount of wax being used in any one project. 200g wax x 10% = 20g of fragrance oil. ย How to know what wick to use? See Lesson 8. Measure inner diameter of jar. Use CDN wick chart to match and allocate wick use. This is a guide only and you must conduct test burn to determine suitability. If wick chart suggests CDN 14. You can test CDN 12, 14 or 16 for suitability. ย  Why should I test burn? Lesson 8. To determine if you have the right size wick and fragrance load for the jar size. The wick chart is a guide only. Any time you had a different fragrance or colour combination the wick can produce different results. ย  What to look for in a test burn? Lesson 8. If the candle takes too long to create a melt pool, the wick is too small. If the Melt pool is deeper than 2cm after 4 hrs, the wick is too large. If the flame is too erratic it is an indication there is too much fragrance or too much heat and you need to adjust one or the other. ย  Why do I get sink holes, surface flaws on my finished candles? Lesson 7. Even the most experienced candle maker will often find their finished soy candles have an uneven, rough surface finishes. Many things can contribute towards these characteristics. Here are some things you can try to help correct this problem. โ€ข Avoid over stirring. โ€ข Adjust your pouring temperatures. โ€ข Working in an ambient temperature room. โ€ข Avoid extremely hot or cold rooms. โ€ข Warm your jars before pouring. โ€ข Tap glass gently after you pour to release any air bubbles. โ€ข Slow down the cooling process. โ€ข Pour more slowly. โ€ข Make sure candles are well spaced during the ย Use a heat gun or hairdryer to re-melt the surface. ย  Can I use essential oils?ย  Lesson 9. Based on our research we do not think itโ€™s a good idea to use essentials oils. They are very volatile oils and you need to use less than 5% fragrance load. This means the candle will have very little scent throw. We suggest to only use fragrance oils that have been specifically made for the candle combustion application. ย  Can I mix fragrance oils? Lesson 9. Yes, you can blend fragrance oils, itโ€™s an economical way to make your product go further. We strongly suggest you always test burn any blends to ensure you get what you desire. ย What does the Flashpoint on a fragrance mean? Lesson 9. The flashpoint is the temperature a fragrance can combust if exposed to an open flame or spark. Usually the lower the flashpoint the more volatile the fragrance, so sometimes it is better to use less like 7%. The higher the flashpoint, the more stable the fragrance and be easily used at the maximum 10%. ย  ย How do I get my candle to smell stronger? The most common issue is that soy candles have a massive cold scent throw and users usually become immune to the scent and do not realize this. So, keep the lid on your candles when not burning. Make sure you have not become immune to the scent from the cold scent throw. Too often clients enjoy the cold scent throw but do not realise their senses eventually shutdown because they have been overloaded. Keep the container size and room size in mind. The wider the diameter, the larger the candle surface area, the stronger the fragrance will be. While a smaller candle, such as a jar 7cm wide jar, may be sufficient for a bedroom or bathroom, a larger living space may require a candle with a wider diameter to fill the room with fragrance, like 8 to 9cm wide. Under wicking and sometimes over wicking will have an effect on hot scent throw. Please sure you conduct proper test burns to ensure you have the right size wick for your candle Some say allowing candles to cure for 1 week before use helps. ย  Why canโ€™t I smell my candle burning? The most common issue is that soy candles have a massive cold scent throw and users usually become immune to the scent and do not realize this. So, keep the lid on your candles when not burning. Make sure you have not become immune to the scent from the cold scent throw. Too often clients enjoy the cold scent throw but do not realise their senses eventually shutdown because they have been overloaded. ย  Why does my candle wick have a mushroom form after burning? Lesson 10. This is the result of carbon build-up, where the flame consumes more wax than it can burn. It is a common occurrence and can be a sign that the wick is too large for the candle. Keep in mind that larger wick sizes from CDN 14 up, are prone to mushrooming more frequently than other smaller wicks from CDN 14 down. If "mushrooming" occurs with your candle, we recommend trimming the carbon build-up off the wick between burns. If you are seeing a combination of excessive mushrooming along with soot building up on the sides of your container, we would recommend wicking down one wick size to help control the burn. ย  ย Why does it look like there is oil seeping out top of candle? Fragrance will seep out and sit on top of candle if it hasnโ€™t bonded well with soy. Remedy:ย  โ€ข Add fragrance at a higher temperature 80 to 85 degrees and make sure you stir well for 1 to 2 minutes before pouring. โ€ข Use less fragrance. Sometimes less is moreโ€ฆ ย  What is the wet spot on the side of my jar? This is a glass adhesion issue caused through wax shrinkage. It is quite common in paraffin candle sand will also happen with soy. It occurs when candles / jars / environment is too cold and candles set too quickly. Remedy: โ€ข Heat jars before poring. โ€ข Have an ambient room temperature. โ€ข Slow down the cooling and setting process. ย
